Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health

The gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians can be up to 20 years. RHealth works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to improve health outcomes in communities across the Darling Downs and South West Queensland.

Closing the Gap
The Federal Government is working across sectors to help reduce this gap and as part of their commitment provided funds for Indigenous Health Project Officers and Indigenous Outreach Workers to organisations like RHealth.

Indigenous Outreach Workers are based in Cunnamulla, St George, Goondiwindi, and Toowoomba, servicing Dalby and Cherbourg. The team of Workers speaks with communities to identify their health needs and where RHealth can help them to better access services in their region.

The Indigenous Health Project Officer works with general practices and Aboriginal Medical Services to get them involved in the Indigenous Health Practice Incentive Payment available through Medicare. Cultural awareness/cultural safety training has just been approved by RACGP and will be rolling out to general practices right across South West Queensland over the next few months.
